kombee Assembly Instructions

These instructions are for the kombee v0.2 PCB

kombee BOM

PartDescription
C1, C222 pF 0805 Capacitor - Not connected if Resonator is used
C3,C5,C6100 nF 0805 Capacitor
R110k 0805 Resistor
U1ATMega328P-PU
U128 Pin Dip Socket
Q116Mhz Resonator - OR - 16Mhz Crystal
TTLSerial2.54mm 5 Pin header - Optional
XB12.0mm 10 pin hearder
RF2x4 2.54mm pitch female pin header

Warning

The kombee is not 5V compatible, do not apply 5v to the ttl serial header. If you are using a serial programmer which cannot be jumper-ed to run at 3.3v you need to remove the nRF24L01 transceiver.

  1. Step 1: Solder the 10k pull-up resistor. Your BOM contains a few SMD parts. As R1 is the only resistor it will Be 1 of them.
    Install 10K resistor
  2. Step 2: Solder the three.1uF/100nF 0805 capacitors C3,C5, C6. There is no polarity for these. From your BOM the 3 caps will be in a strip of 3 caps.
    Install 100nF capacitors
  3. Step 3: If you will be using the Crystal instead of an oscillator flip the board over and solder the 22pF caps.
If using a crystal instead of oscillator install the 22pF caps
  4. Step 4: Add the 28 Pin Socket
    getting there now
  5. step 5:Install the crystal or resonator now, In this picture a Crystal was used, the arrows indicate the soldering locations for the crystal. If using an oscillator there is no need for the 22pF caps. If using a Resonator it will also use the middle pad.
Install the crystal or resonator now
  6. Step 6:Add the 2x4 female pin header
    Install the nrf Header
  7. Step 7 : Add the Xbee pins
    xbee pins
  8. Step 8: If you will be using an xbee explorer board to program your kombee board you do not need to install the serial header shown here, if using a regular FTDI adapter you will need to add this header. NOTE you cannot apply 5v power to this header while the RF transceiver is attached.
    optional serial header
  9. Step 9: Add your Atmega328P-PU

Testing

10: connect your kombee and check to make sure that your source power is set to 3.3v
Do not add the RF transceiver until after you have tested voltage.

Check Power is 3.3v
11. Now to test your board is working properly you need to connect it to power, connect the kombee to your serial programmer. Measure the voltage at pins 1&2 of the RF header. If the reading on pin2 is between 3.3v and 3.6v you did it!!!!
